NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to /‘Star.”) TIMARU, July 21. Omahu was made a slightly better favourite for the South Canterbury Steeplechase than the bracketed pair (Red Cent and Manawaponga). Red jCent set out to make the pace, but Manawaponga proved too much for his stable mate, who fell at the second fence of the double, his rider (A. McMullan) getting his face cut rather bully and having to get it stitched. .Manawaponga continued in the lead, jumping everything in great style and gaining lengths at every leap, while Omahu, who was dodging along some -lengths away, was fencing very cautiously and was evidently in need oi schooling. With six furlongs to go the race was a match between Manawaponga and Omahu, ami the latter, who was fencing better as he went along, overhauled the big chestnut before reaching the last fence and beat him in the run to the winning post Vpry comfortably. Omahu pulled up as if the race will do him a lot of good, and he lost no admirers of his chance in the Grand National Steeplechase through his performance. Sartoline, as usual, baulked, and Romance was unlucky as the riderless Red Cent ran him off at the fence entering the straight at the end of the first round. Still these happenings did not make any difference to the result. MATAMATA RACING CLUB. SECOND DAY’S RESULTS. (Per Press Association ) AUCKLAND, July 21.
