_ ■ MARIST JUNIORS’ TOUR. One of the events of the year, as far as the junior team of the M 8.0.8. A. is concerned, is the annual tour ol the Buller district. This year the team was somewhat adversely affected through a number of the members contracting influenza, but siiiliciciit ol their number had recovered m time to set out on 1-riday for this year's tour. The party left siioi'tly alter 1 o clock on JL'riday afternoon m charge ol Mr T. OTlallahan as manager. They were the. guests of me Westport public that evening at a ball given in their honour. The game against Buller junior reps., played on .Saturday afternoon, proved a good exhibition of spectacular football. Both teams were m good form, but although the Marist backs were superior, the Buller forwards had a distinct advantage in weight over their opponents. For Buller °King kicked two penalty goals and. Fane and King scored tries. J. Quinn and J. llastie each scored a try for Marists. As neither of these was converted, the game ended in the defeat of Marist by 12 to 6. Eor Marist, Jackson, in the forwards, and Lake, at half-back, played a great game. Dmby James made two sensational runs, but had bad luck on each occasion as he neared the goal. Referee, Mr 11. Casey. The team yesterday met the Rovers at Granity, and were greatly pleased with the hospitality they received at the hands of the residents. After dinner, which was provided by the Granity people, the game was played under fine weather conditions. Both teams were very even, and a good game resulted. Eor Rovers, Danks scored two tries and King kicked two penalty goals in good style. McEnaney, from fast following up, outpaced the opposition and scored a great try for Marist. McGinley failed with the kick. Moore scored a further try for Marist after a dashing run to the corner of the field. Jackson kicked two penalty goals, which made the game 12 all. Jackson, D. A meting of the Natives of the Maniapoto tribe decided to present a fifty guinea cup for an intertribal competition among New Zealand Maoris. The conditions will be simiar to the Ranfurly Shield. August 25: Greymouth v. Blackball ; Runanga v. Rewanui. Marist A and State met at A ictoria Park on Saturday morning, Marist winning by 4 goals to 0. In the first half Marist, with the wind in their favour, scored the four goals per medium of Bayley (2), O’Donnell, and Jackson, but in the second half honours were fairly even. The best players wore O’Donnell (Marist), and Robinson (State), while Jackson and Baylev for Marist and Hickling as goalkeeper for Stale, also did good work. BLACKBALL v. SHOP ASSISTANTS An even game saw each side score two goals. Blackball’s being obtained by Caldwell, and Shop Assistants’ by Freitas and Q Leary. Mr Quibell refereed.
