LOCAL AND GENERAL

Mr A. C. Hall, club captain of the M.8.0.8.A., will be presented at the social to be held by the Association in St. Columba Hal this evening with an oak table and a set of chairs. The present, which is being made in honour of Mr Hall's marriage, is from the St. Columba Club and from the Marist Old Boys’ Football and Tennis Clubs.

An excellent programme has been arranged for the concert to be held on July 24 in aid of the funds for the erection of the Dean Carew Memorial School. The concert will take place in the Opera House, and among the artists who will contribute items are Mr Hadland, Mr T. Clarke, Mr A. P. Giffney, Miss Jones (Hokitika), Mrs A. C. Hall, Miss Ethel Wallace, and the Marist Brothers’ School Choir under the baton of the Rev. Brother Hendrick.

Owing to the slippery nature of the road consequent on the recent bad weather, much trouble was experienced yesterday with the coaches from Arthur’s Dass to Otira. In some parts of the road, it is understood, the horses had to be detached and the coaches taken over the dangerous parts without their assistance. The express, on which there were a good many passengers, did not arrive in Greymouth until 8 o’clock.

Clear telephonic communication with Christchurch at any hour of the day will be possible within a short time after th eopening of the Otira lunnel, according to enquiries made at the Post Office to-day. Air J. AlcDermott, District Telegraph Engineer, arrived in Greymouth last evening and left for Hokitika this afternoon. He is investigating the condition of the different parts of the A\ est oCast for telephone lines. It is intended to employ a gang of about 150 men in the Tunnel next Sunday putting through the line that will link up Greymouth with Chirstchurch. The work cannot be completed immediately, but the line will be ready for use a short time after the tunnel is open. The charge will be no greater than at present that is, about 2/6 for three minutes’ conversation. ..
