Mr and Mrs Thomas Seddon, wh have been visiting Wellington, return ed last evening. Mrs Frank Hampson, Reefton, i - visiting Greymouth, being the guest o her parents, Mr and Mrs T. L. Felton Hon H. Michel, M.L.C., was. a pas senger from Christchurch last even ing. He proceeded to Hokitika fron Otira by motor-car. Mr J. Poynton, S.M., has been, ap pointed sole Arbitrator in the. Papa roa coal mine dispute. He left Auck land for Wellington last evening. A London cablegram stated thai Brigadier-General Ricardo, while in specting a reservoir at Strabane, be longing to a company in which he was interested, fell in and was drowned. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr J A'. Flesher) has been laid aside by ar Attack of influenza, and will not be able to attend to his public or private business for some days. ; Miss Jessie Webb, of Melbourne ■University, at present in South Africa, has been ’ appointed the Australian lady delegate to the Geneva Conference. Mr George Westbrook, Government Honey Grader, arrived at Greymouth last evening, on a short visit. He is k son of the late Rev Westbrook, formerly Presbyterian Minister at Greyxnputh. Mr J. Mclndoe, Clerk of the Magistrate’s Court, will leave for Ciiristchurch and Wellington to-morrow. He will be relieved by Mr J. T. Bishop, of t the Justice Department, Wellington. 1, — “ ■ The Nelson Technical School Board of 'Managers has selected Mr 11. F. Elliott as instructor of the engineering-. department. Mr Elliott, who held the rank of major during the war, gained the Whitworth Scholarship m 1903. * ' The engagement is announced of Miss McDonald, of The Lodge, Hanmet Springs, daughter of Mr and Mrs McDonald, late managers of the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and the. Government Sanatorium at Hanmer Springs, to Mr Jas. Manson, son of Mr David Manson, of Kirwee, late manager of Craigieburn and St Helens Stations. Mr T. Fogarty, for many years associated with Mr Kim Williams, in the firm of Fogarty and Williams; has purchased a mercery business hi High Street, Christchurch. Since leaving Greymouth Mr Fogarty has resided in Christchurch, where he was connected with the firm ’of Messrs M. O’Brien and: Co., boot and shoe manufacturers. Major H. G. Grace. M.C., a New Zealander, has been appointed adviser and companion of the heir of the Gaekwar of Baroda., Major Grace is a son of the late Archdeacon Grace, of Blenheim, and nephew of Mr L. M. Grace, of Wellington, and of Mr A. A. Grace, of Nelson, the author of many tales of Maori folk-lore. Major Grace was educated at Nelson College; from which he passed into the •Indian Army. ' s The Very Rev. Dean Thomas M’Kenna died on Sunday at New Plymouth, aged 60. He was born in Ireland' and came to New Zealand in 1888. He ministered „at Masterton, Hawera, Patea and PaFiatua, and after being twenty-six years at Pahiatua, was appointed to the charge of Newtown, Wellington, coming last year to New Plymouth, to succeed the late Dean James M'Kenna. He was taken seriously ill in September last, which precluded, active work. The requiem mass and funeral will be held at' Pahiatua on Thursday. Monsignor John M’Kenna, vicar-general of the Wellington Roman Catholic ArchDiocese, is a brother of deceased. The late Dean took a prominent part in football and cricket in his younger days M
