—— — — CHAMPIONSHIPS AIEETING. (Per Press Association.) TIM ARI J, January 30. At the .swimming championships, the Nelson Shield Competition took place today in Caroline Bay, when four teams entered, and a fine contest resulted: New Brighton, 153pts, 1; Canterbury, 149pts, 2 j .Wellington, 147pts, 3; North Beach, 126pts, 4. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association's annual conference was held to day, the. business extending over nearly six hours. A large number of remits were considered, dealing with many aspects of the sport. It was decided that the intermediate class be abolished, the junior age raised to sixteen, and that a junior diving championship be added . A remit from Wanganui, that a professional coach he engaged, caused much discussion ; but ultimately it was withdrawn in favour of a motion that the Minister of Education be approached to produce a. handbook on swimming for use by teachers in schools. A remit from Canterbury, that the championships be confined to the i'ou:. centres, was rejected, and it was decided that the next championships be held at Wanganui. The question of selling a team to the Olympic Games at Paris was discussed, but no decisive steps were taken till the Council hears from the centres as to the likelihood of raising sufficient funds. The conference continues to-morrow.
