THACKERISMS
PETS, PLAGUES, AND POLLS.
(Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, January 50. “I intend asking the Council,” said the .Mayor (Dr. Thacker) to a reporter to-day, ‘‘to give the City Surveyor, Mr. C. Dawe, three months' leave , of absence, so that he can accompany me to the United States, and gam information as to the latest methods of dealing with the control of street traffic, and with street cleaning, and regarding other civic activities and services. The horse will have to go out of the city. Horses m the city are responsible lor two-thirds of the cleaning up that is necessary. All horses should be out of the central ward, also all dogs and eats. Every cat and dog in the city, where there is a vegetable garden, is a menace to the health of the people who own them, because they are sure carriers of infectious disease, smallpox, plague and hydatids. Quite a number of the operations being performed at present are for hydatids and many of those operated on are young people, and this is on account of pet cats and dogs.” “If there is another general election, and it doesn’t come off before I leave on my visit to America,” Dr. Thacker added, “I’m going to leave a nomination paper all ready made out.” “For Christchurch East?” asked the reporter. “No, for Christchurch,” Dr. Thacker replied. “There will be proportional representation. The evolution of the present Parliament will be to pass Appropriation and Imprest Supply, put Proportional Representation on the Statute Rook, and have another general election. I reckon a general election will be about March 20.”
