RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) Mr. Kemball paid £lOOO for Insurrection. Itazzle Dazzle is not engaged in the Middle Park Plate on Saturday, but will probably make her next appearance m the Champagne Stakes at Dunedin. The successful three-year-old hlly Gold Ligiit appears nicely treated in tiie Dunedin Cup with 8.4. When she dead-heated in the Oaks at Riccarton sue carried 8.10, and ran the mile and a-ha.ii in 2.35 4-5. She has since won in the best handicap company at Ellerslie, the distance being ten furlongs, and over a- mile course at Trentnam. Of the eight Australian and i,ew Zealand jockeys riding in England last hat-racing season, B. Carslake did best with 59 winners in 332 mounts, h. Bullock was second with 50 in 32U, then coming G. Smith, 36 in 266, ft. Gray, 34 in 251, L. Brown, 11 in bl, F. Voight, 6 in 28, W. H. McLachlan b in 3b, and J. Brown 5 in 85. Mention has been made of Stanley Wootton s apparently inherited ability for making jockeys, and it is interesting to read of Ins most successful apprentice, C. Smirke. In a two-year-cmi race at Manchester he was riding Jason at 6.9, and landed his mount a narrow winner from better favourites in Rath Duth (Donoghue) and Atirovaf (Carslake). He is said to have fairly shone at the finish against the two crack riders mentioned. Smirke is only about 5.7, but is very strong. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. The tracks at Riccarton were not open on Friday and Saturday last, so nr. McNab considerately opened them on Sunday from 5 to 9 a.m. The outside ci tiie trial grass was in use, and Liiougn a tritie holding, was not nearly so suit as was to have been expected. Valdamo, who lightened up considerably while at Wellington, was sent lound at a good half pace, and finished up by rattling home over the last three furlongs. Parody and Heathcote sprinted half a mile, Parody coming away from her stablemate alter going three furlongs, and finished well clear of her in 50 o-bsecs.

Cupidon, who looks none the worse for ins racing at Wellington, went round to the half mile post at a good hall pace, and then ran home from there in 51 3-ssecs, without the boy moving on him. Pluto and Tressayr sprinted half a mile in 50 4-ssecs., Pluto being the victor. Both geldings look lighter tiian usual. Red Hind and Owlscombe ran half a mile in 51 2-ssec., without any bother, ami The Reaver could have improved upon tne 52 4-ssec. he took to cover the same ground. Many Kittle, who was brought home by Lord Ashlea, galloped seven furlongs easily in 1.35 1-5. biurihaupo sprinted four furlongs without an effort in 50 4-5., and Mustard Pot ran six furlongs in a similar manner, his lime being 1.23. Some Kid, who was getting some weight liom the two-year-old Sprinkler, beat hin. easily over half a mile in b'2secs.

Contempt, who always goes very scratchilv, galloped a mile comfortably in 1.47 2-5.

the Polymnian beat Lucinette comfortably over half a mile in 51 2-ssecs. Palestrina, Scrimmage, and Winning Hit were given steady pacing, amt Gtentruin, who was very gay, was exercised on the bit.

.Martis ran half a mile under a pull in 52 l-ssecs.

Bonny iMac looked to be capable of improving upon the 51secs. lie took over hall a. mile, but Liqueur, who has bene suilering from foot trouble, was struggling while running the same distance in 54 2-ssecs.

Gay Life, who was in receipt of a good 281 b., managed to stay with Castellan while they dashed over half a mile up the back in 49 l-ssecs. The going up the back is always faster than down the straight.
