Despite the adverse weather conditions prevailing last night a large number of ratepayers attended"—at the United Pavilion for the purpose of discussing the advisability of forming a Ratepayers’ Association. It was generally conceded that such an Association was desirable in Greymouth ns it was recognised that in the interests of the ratepayers certain matters of public cencera should be brought more prominently before the Borough Council. It is the newly-formed Association’s intention to assist in conserving the ratepayers’ interests, and generally, to give what help it can cowards benefiting the town. Mr. F. a. Kitchingham was voted to the chair. It was unanimously decided to form an association to be called “The Greymouth Ratepayers’ Association,” such association to comprise ratepayers from every part of the Borough. This was stressed particularly on account of an idea having gojje abroad that the membership was limited to ratepayers from a certain part of the Borough. Officers were then elected as follow : — Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. W. M. Richardson; .Committee ; Messrs H. H. Allison, H. H. Herring, G. R. Cottle, R A Barrowman, A E Kilgour, and J. S. Robertson. After discussion it was resolved that this committee be a working one to bring forward information to be dealt with at the general meetings of all members. General meetings are to be held monthly. An annual subscription of 2/6 was fixed to defray expenses of meeting place, and advertising. It was unanimously de.cided to write to the Borough Council protesting against the Council’s action in giving away prior right to the Recreation Ground to any Society. In view of the. urgency of the ratepayers’ opinion being brought before tlle-'Ubuncil, it was decided to request the Borough Council to receive a deputation from the Association at its meeting to-morrow night. A discussion took plSce regarding the enclosing of Borough Reserves by high fences, and also in connection with the letting oFthe Town Hall. It was decided that both of these matters be referred to the Working Committee to report to the general meeting to be held on January 18, 1923. Before passing a vote bf thanks To the chair if was recommended that all. members present endeavour to erilist/the co-operation of ■ all ratepayers ih* the town.
