OUR CANTERBURY NOTES

(Special to the Star.)

CHRISTCHURCH, June 24

Dick O’Donnell has received an important training appointment, and lie will leave for the North shortly to take charge of the Trentham. stables, which w r as formerly presided over by Hariy Telford. The chief patrons of the stable are L. G. Duncan, K. Duncan and Dr. AV. E. Herbert, while A'iscountess Jellicoe also lias a. yearling in the team in preparation for next season’s two-year-old events. O’Donnell learned liis business under R. J. Mason at Yaldhurst, where he was suosequently installed as private trainer to \V. G. and G- L- Stead. Later, when the brothers dissolved partnership, he continued ot train for G. ,L. Stead, first at Yaldhurst anl afterwards ;n the North Island. About two years ago, wdren Mr. Stead curtailed his team, O’Donnell decided to. have a spell from racing and since then he Las practised as a. veterinary dentist. T he call to the racecourse has proved too strong how’ever, and he will resume his old culling.

Rumours are in circulation in various parts of the Dominion concerning a number of jockeys who are expected to find it hard to obtain licenses next season. Unfavourable reports concerning their general conduct will be difficult to combat in several cases.

The AVest Coast-owned stallion, Chariie McKinney, has been sold to Air, J. M. Brosnan, of Mataura, owner of Four Chimes. RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) The V.R.C. Grand Nationl Hurdle Rave will be decided next Saturday, 1 nd the Grand National Steeplechase a week later.

Entries for the principal events at ihe C'.J.C. Grand National meeting close next Friday. There was a lot of merit in Red Cent’s win in the Hawkes Bay Steeplechase Jast week, for early in the contest he met with' a. mishap that sent him hack from first position to last. Gradually making up his leeway, the All Red gelding closed on the leaders, and, having First Line’s measure two fences from home, won with a good deal in reserve. He is engaged in the Wellington Steeplechase, and is evidently improving with every race. In Melbourne, Fiscom is a staunch favourite for the Grand National Hurdle Race, other fancied candidates being Myownbay, Roisel and Pistolier. Mountain Gold is the popular choice for the Grand National SteeplechaseHe is followed in the quotations by Gazomp, Berribee and Grand FieetMr. Harry Beasley, an Irish owner, though 70 years, of age, still rides m races on the flat or over fences. His son is also an amateur rider. At Punchestown (Ireland); in April, Mr.. Beasley, sen., rode his own mare, Maid of Arras, in the Conyngham Cup, but she fell. Nothing daunted, the veteran ran after the mare, caught her, and re-

mounted. The crowd-gave him a great reception when he rode back to the paddock.

F. Voight, the well-fcnown southern lightweight horseman, has left for England, where he has secured an engagement with a leading stable. Visccuntess Jellicoe has entered her two yearlings, Gartmore (Boniform — Prelude) and Ralston (Boniform — Peace) for the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes. The Sydney trainer W. J. Tomkinscn is expected to arrived in Christchurch early next month with a team of ten trotters and pacers. He will race most of them at the August meeting. The entry for the Melbourne Cup this year, 259, is the largest on record, the best previously being 278 in 1919. The death is reported from Buenis Aires of the famous horse Botafogo, who cost his owner £40,000 in 1919. Botafogo was only once beaten dining his turf career, and that was when tie ran second to Grey Fox, a horse now at the stud in England. “Had I my will,” says the “Special Correspondent” of the London “Sportsman,” I would not allow tubed horses to run any more than doped horses, 10 11 racing is for the benefit of the breed at large, and we do not want false credit to be given to winners by artificial assistance.”

Starter A. G. Wood has definitely decided to take a jaunt to Sydney, and leaves for the New South Wales capital to morrow.

'the Australasian states that a racing man on June 1 supported his opinion that Montague le Roi and Trupenny would win the Grand National doublerlhe first-named was killed at Randwick, and on tlie same day Truepenny was fatally injured at Flemington. Two “dead certainties.”
