COBDEN TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING.

The regular monthly meeting of Cobden Town Board was hold last evening. Present Commissioners Billett (Chairman), Orams, Walter, Sotheran, Barret, Excell and Tomlinson. The Works Committee reported that the grading of Blackett Street has been carried out. It has been decided to widen the turn at the corner of Palmerston Street and Nelson Quay to relieve the danger now existing. Arrangements are being made to cart gravel to various streets as required. A report was also presented regarding the visit of the Hon. Minister of Education, /find the questions Ibroufch’t under his notice, and also in regard to the sitting of the Assessment Court, which determined several valuations to which objection had been made. A report from the Fire Equipment Committee showed what has been done in this connection.

The Ranger reported that four horses and 16 cows were impounded during the week. The Manager, Bank New South Wales, wrote regarding overdraft limit in accordance with Finance Act, 1921, and this matter was referred to a sub-committee to arrange.

A request from a resident for a supply of gravel was not conceded as he is a non-ratepayer. Communications received from the Health Department in reference to improvements to drain, etc., of two places in the town were dealt with as instructed .

A letter was read from the Hon. Secretaries Grey District Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Fund, seeking assistance, and it was resolved that the sum of £5/5/- be voted to the fund, which amount, it was pointed out, together with the sums collected by the R.S.A. canvassers should make a fitting con- • tribution from Cobden to assist in perpetuating the memory of fallen ' soldiers who went from the Grey District to the Great War.

The Treasurer reported rates outstanding £144, and it was resolved that those who have not paid their rates be notified that unless satisfactory arrangements for payment of same are made within two weeks, steps will be taken to issue summonses for their recovery. /

It was decided that future meetings of the Board be held at 7.30 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. A special meeting of the Cobden Town Board was held prior to the ordinary meeting last evening for the purpose of adopting the balance sheet for the year ended March 31, 1922, which was returned duly certified by the Audit office. It was decided that a copy be made available for perusal by ratepayers at the Board’s office. Members agreed that the balance sheet disclosed a healthy state of affairs taking into account the exceptional and non-recurring expenditure, incidental to a newly-formed local body.
