SCULLING

HANNAN'S EASY WIN.

[Per Association.) BLENHEIM, June 4. The match for the sculling championship of New Zealand and a purse of £2OO, subscribed by the people of Picton,- between Pat Hannan and “Jumbo” Mells, both of Blenheim, was got off at Picton on Saturday. The weather was wretched, rain falling in torrents all day, but the conditions were satisfactory for sculling, the water being like glass. A good start was effected, but Hannan (the holder of the championship) was ob viously a class ahead of Wells, and he drew steadily away. When half the journey had been covered, Hannan was leading by a length and a-half. At this stage, Wells informed the umpire that his slide had broken, and he and his boat were picked up by a launch. Hannan finished the course alone, covering the distance In 21.14. The attendance was poor, on account of the weather. The purse was paid over in the presence of a big crowd at the thatre at Picton on Saturday night.
