Miss Scott who is leaving for Sydney at an early date, has resigned her position with the firm of Alanson and Co. According to a London cablegram the late Sir Thomas Birkin, a lace manufacturer, of Nottingham, left a fortune of two millions sterling. Air. J. F. White, of Cray and Co., who has been confined to his home for the past fortnight, hopes to be able to return to business next week. Mr. Raynor White, L.L.C.AI., has ■ been appointed judge of the vocal and instrumental sections in the competitions to be held at Leeston. A New York cablegram states that Sir Ernest Raeburn, Director-General in the United States of the British Ministry of Shipping, died of pneumonia, after five days’ illness. Major R. S. Matthews, M.8.E., who has been on the staff of the Public Health Department in Christchurch for the past three years, retired on Saturday.

For the first time in the history of Australia a woman —Miss Muriel Henderson —has been appointed private secretary at the Government House (states a Sydney cablegram). Air. P. L. Hollings, S.M., of Blenheim, has gone to Wanganui, where he relieves Air. T. A. B. Bailey, S.AI., who is suffering from an attack of typhoid fever. Air. Hollings’s duties at Blenheim will be taken by Air. J. S. Evans, S.AI., of Nelson. Private advice has been received that Mr. Alfred Ashton, a native of Greymouth and for some years employed in the Railway Department, had a stroke yesterday and was taken to the Westport Hospital.

Mr. Stanley B. Pilcher, who for three years has been the Picton agent for the Union S.S. Company, has taken charge of the company’s office at Bluff. Mr. Pilcher can boast of 72 transfers —37 steamers and 35 branches —since he joined the company. The death of Mr. Dominic Solo took place on Friday at the Old People’s Home, Kumara. Deceased was a native of Italy, 85 years of age, and had been an inmate of the Home for the past 15 years. The funeral took place at the Kumara Cemetery on Saturday. The death took place on Friday in the Buller Hospital of Richard Francis Williams. Canon Coursey, on behalf of the parishioners, made a presentation of a travelling rug and mentioned that Die Hobbs family had been main stays of the church from quite ear > times and their removal to Auckland meant a big loss to the Church.
