Notwithstanding the fact that there are dozens of sawmills and thousands ’ of acres of bush on the West Coast, 3 the secretary of the Grey District ’ High School Committee stated on 3 day evening that he had experienced the greatest difficulty in securing 1 loads of firewood for the schools. He " had rung up a timber firm and also ’ several sawmills, with no result, and 1 finally secured a few loads of firewood ! through the good offices of another 1 resident who had been more success--3 ful in his search. No doubt 13 S another result of the activities of ‘Mri 3 Slump,” as it is probably not worth ’ while for the mills to work for the purpose of supplying only the comparatively small demand for fire- _ wood. The Chairman of a West - Coast committee was explaining a 1 point to one of the members, and con--1 eluded his remarks in real Yankee v style: “Get me?” His departure from i pure English was apparently not no, ticed by the members. ! Tho Paihia (Bay of Islands) Church “ claims to have the oldest church or- ' gan in New Zealand, it having been 11 sent out by the Church Missionary e Society about 1850. Owing, however, 6 to rats having eaten holes in many ® of the leaden pipes and minor faults, it was rendered useless some two years ’ ago. It was then considered that only an expert could repair it, and at considerable expense, after the Synod, . Archbishop Julius spent a week at Paihia, and, seeing the position of the q organ, undertook to put it in working order again, which he did. It is now ’ in better order than for many years s past.

An amusing story that is going the rounds of Patutahi (near Gisborne) illustrates that stolen fruit may SODao i times prove very costly. It is stated that some time back some young men hired a gig in town, and on reaching a well-loaded orchard in that district, went inside to admire its portable contents. But the owner became aware of their unwelcome presence on his property and sent his son on a roundabout journey, which resulted in the horse being detached from the vehicle and placed in custody at the back of the homestead. Then the fruitgrower 1 and liis son sallied forth into the orchard to interview the visitors, all but one of whom fled precipitately. The upshot, it is understood, was that the unlawful intruders, rather than face publicity, decided to. atone for their misbehaviour by making a handsome cash donation to a charitable institution.
