OBITUARY

— —— MIV. THOMAS JONES

A pioneer of the West Coast, Sir. Thomas Jones, died at Napier yesterday. He came to New Zealand with the early gold miners and to the Coast in the first flush of the golden days, Jones’ Flat, north of Brunner, being called after him and

his brother Henry. He kept an hotel in Brmmerton and in Gil.vniouth and then removed to Wellington after having spent some time in the Runanga district. He recently retired to Napier. The late Mr. Jones was highly respected by a wide circle of friends on the Coast. He leaves a family of four sons, Thomas (of Danneyirke), James, Frank and William (of the Railway Department, Wellington), and one daughter Mrs. Kinniniuouth (of the Bay ot Plenty). His wife predeceased him about a year ago. Mr. Jones was a native of Wales, and had reached the age of 81 years. MR. GEORGE H. WOODS. The death occurred on Monday evening at his residence, Dunn Street, of Mr. George Hamilton Woods, for the past quarter of a century a resident of Reefton, and a well known miner at the Globe Mine. The deceased had been in indifferent for several years past, suffering from bronchitis and miners’ phthisis, and was a great sufferer. He was a native of Christchurch and 59 years of ago. Previous to coming to Reefton he resided in Greymouth. He is survived by a widow, but no family.

MR. E. NORDON. (Special to the Star.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. Mr. E. Nordon, who died at Wellington this morning, came to the Dominion from London about twentyseven years ago, and was connected with the cycling spirt in Auckland for some time. Afterwards he was at Ashburton for a number of years, and was at one time Ashburton representative of the '’Lyttelton Times.” He left Ashburton to take up the secretaryship of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association at Christchurch, and he relinquished that position, after twenty years’ service, in 1920 for health reasons. After a trip to the Old Country he returned to Wellington about eighteen months ago. A

few weeks ago he was appointed editor of the masonic journal the “Craftsman,” a postiion of which he was very proud. He took a very keen interest in freemasonry and Was for years up till the time of his death, a member of the New Zealand Grand Lodge, while he was intimately connected -with various lodges in Christchurch, and was one of those who promoted the Masonic Hall Company. He was closely associated with various sports. He was at one time chairman of the League of Wheelmen, one of the committee of the Sports Club, secretary and delegate to the New Zealand Swimming Association and Secretary and later Chairman of tho New Zealand Hockey Association. The Nordon Cup was given by Him for inter-provincial competition in hockey. During the war he had a seat on the Canterbury Patriotic Fund and Red Cross executive. He was a highly respected member of tho Jewish community in Christchurch, and had a very wide circle of friends throughout New Zealand.

MISS A. BAWDEN. 'Special to the Star.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 23 The death occurred on Friday of Miss Alice Bawden, matron of the Tauranga Hospital. Deceased went to Tauranga from New Plymouth a little over a year ago to take charge of the hospital as matron. She had been in failing health for some time. Miss Bawden was well known in Hokitika, her parents being among the pioneers of the West Coast. She with an elder sister served her period as probationer in the Christchurch Hospital) under Nurse Maude. Her elder sister also died while in fhe nursing profession, the sad event happening just as she became a trained
