SERIES OF GRIEVANCES
iAustralian and N.Z. Cable Association./
SYDNEY, May 23
One of the most pressing problems with which the new of New South Wales is faced is of the seething discontent that exists on some of the soldier settlements. The men make sweeping complaints regarding the alleged inefficiency of the official administration, the broken promises, the want of necessary funds to tide over tho earlier stages of settlement and to develop the holdings, and other what are called remediable troubles. Considerable numbers of the settlers have abandoned their holdings, being disgusted with the treatment, and with the barren outlook. Others, are threatening to leave. A bad season has added to the difficulties of the position. Colonel Chaffey is visiting the settlements, and inquiring into the complaints with a view to Government action for removing the causes of discontent.
