BUTTER POOL

PROPOSAL RE-DISCUSSED (Ajieciai to tile Star.) WELLINGTON, April 6. This season s experience of me uactuating prices on tne export butler marnet lias revived dairy producers' interest in a pooling proposal lor export purposes. Inis was discussed, when tne meat pool wa« in process of formation, out on tnat occasion definite opinions were expressed by representatives of tne dairy producers that their organisation was biiriic, ently complete to achieve their marketing aims. It is reported however, that there has been so great a change in opinion in favour of controlled export that the position is being seriously discussed. Nothing could be dono without legislation and no pooling operation could be started this season, but it is understood that the matter is being made the subject of conferences with those concerned, and tfiat the Government has some idea of what is likely to be proposed. An indispensible preliminary would be an indication from the dairy producers tnat statutory pooling would be widely supported WELLINGTON PRICES.

AVELLINGTON, April 5. Standard brands of butter have again advanced in price to Is 7/>d per lb wholesale (less for promt payment) and Is 9d retail There is some doubt in the trade as to what effect this increase will have upon local consumption. AVhen the price was down to Is 3d undoubtedly many housewives commenced 'to use butter for cooking where formerly they had used cheaper fats. Each penny rise above Is 8d is likely to lessen the sales of butter for this purpose. For ordinary household use there is no formidable rival to butter such as margarine, is in Great Britain, and consumption can bo reduced therefore only by economy in use or by. the substitution of an entirely different article, such as jam or honey.
