SIBERIAN CRISIS
BATTLE IN PROGRESS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) TOKIO, April 5. The War Office has confirmed dispatches, announcing a conflict between the Japanese troops and the troops of Chita, near Spasskoya, 100 miles from Vladivostock. Eighty Chilians have been killed. A battle with heavy artillery is raging. FURTHER SKIRMISHING.
Recd. 2 p.m. TOKIO, April 4. More desultory fighting is reported in Siberia, where the Reds at Spaskaya responded to a Japanese demand that they should disarm by opening fire. Other fighting is in progress along the Usswin railway, in which the Japanese are suffering little, the Reds being untrained recruits and poor shots. An effect of the serious report appears to be the hastening of the Dairen negotiations, which are now Sported to be reaching a conclusion. The Japanese final Note has been answered, which reply will be considered at to-morrow’s session, the Advisory Council having received approval.
