RACING FIXTURES.

March 24, 25 —Westport J.C. March 30, April I—Wellington R.C

WESTPORT JOCKEY CLUB.

(Special to tho Star.)

WESTPORT, March 24. The weather was hue ami the attendance large for the opening day of tno Westport, races. Ine machine handled £4,693, as against £5,435 on mo opening day of last year. I lie jockeys riding at me meeting wore black aimlets out of respect to the late Len Jlageity. During the day only one favourite (halstaft) won, with the remit that some particularly good dividends were returned. Ihe Karamea Handicap resulted m a complete boil over, the winner, Lady .Hiddleton, returning close on a twofigure dividend. Grand Duchy was installed a hot favourite, witn good support also forthcoming lor iiranga. I'iranga was early in front and piloted die neld to the entrance to the straight, where Lady Middleton put in her effort

-nd passed Tiranga, with Carnbrea and ..lack Night also coming last, and Grand Duchy and Lord Ashlea hopeessly beaten". In the run home Lady • uddletun stayed long enough to win

oy half a length from Gambled, with Mack Night a similar distance away, the top weight ran a disappointing i ace and ne\er looked to have a winning chance at any stage. Kedsome was slightly better supported than Steepholm for the Inal flack Handicap, but the favourite ran most, disappointingly. Steepholm was in front from the barrier rise and never left the issue in doubt, winning with a little in hand from Le Forte. L’he latter was making his first appearitice in the colours of Mr. 1. Cameron, ;nd was piloted by V. Lee, while Jennings had the mount on the winner. Foxglove was a warm favourite lor die Granity Trot, with Bonnie Lad .Iso fairly well supported. The favourite, who is a. trifle sore, finished jut of a place, Bonnie Lad winning by t head from Neut-

The Electric Handicap was completely spoilt by a wretched start, and tinier different conditions the winner would not have been first or second. Tunny was made favourite, with Gold•n Morn better supported than Demonstrjite. From what appeared a false start, Wolthea shot away with several lengths lead, while Gatha was left standing. Wolthea maintained his lead all the way, while Golden Morn appeared the only one to seriously challenge him, but the latter could only get within a length and a half as the post was reached, with Bunny another two lengths away third, just in front of Demonstrate. There were only four starters in the Patterson .Memorial, for which Falstaff was made a warm favourite, and never leaving the issue in doubt won by a good couple of lengths from Cheer Up.

Of the half dozen starters in the Orowaiti Handicap, Weary Willie, was belter supported than Merton and Demonstrate. The latter was soon in front, and nicely handled by young Kirwan, led all the way to win by a length from Merton.
