The soldier settlers of the Mahakipawa district are showing a commendable spirit of initiative and self-re-liance (states the Marlborough “Express”). Last year, owing to the bad roads they were faced with considerable difficulty in getting their grain thrashed, but this year twelve of them have formed an association and purchased a combined grain and clover thrashing machine, with which to do their own work and that of their neighbours. The machine, which , was purchased from a Blenheim firm, cost something over £4OO/ and it is anticipated that it will repay its cost in a very short space of time.
