MIDLAND RAILWAY

—— AVORK AT SPRINGFIELD. Extensive alterations are being made tit Springfield in connection with the completion of the Midland Railway. About fifty or sixty men an engine and trucks have been employid for some time. It has been necessary to make a deviation for a distance of about a mile and a half, commencing a. little above the school and joining the existing line near the top of the cutting on the south banic cf the Kowai River. The formation work in connect ion with the deviation and the station yard is now almost completed. A new station having a platform eight chains long is to be built about twelxc chains north of the present Springfield station. Ample land has been acquired for the needs of a large marshalling station and at present six lines of track will be laid. Concrete foundations have been laid down lor an engine shed capable of accommodating four engines, with provision for enlargement when necessary. A considerable amount of work has liecu entailed in diverting the creek carrying the .Malvern water supply, i he. race enters a creek known as Bishop’s Gully about two miles above t? Springfield and pursues a winding course (taking the new station yard in its track) until it crosses the West Coast, road two miles above Aniiat. A new channel has been cut. outside- tho station yard for a distance, of about forty chains with a fall of six feet where tho race crosses the station yard. This fall will probably be utilised for providing power for lighting the station and yard by electricity. It, is understood that, the Railway Department intends building a. number of houses io accommodate the staff (hat will be required for a large and busy station.
