L A policeman is always on duty, ' whether he is in uniform or plain ' clothes; therefore, when Constable William Fisher was travelling fiom ' Christchurch on Thursday on his way ’ to Denniston, he kept his weather eye 1 open. He didn’t meet any bold bad criminals until he got to Stillwater — then he clinched. It was getting dark and the crowd on the station was bustling around in that state of confusion peculiar to ' junction stations. It was hard to , pick faces but Constable Fisher saw , me that seemed to him familiar. He , had seen it in the Police Gazette. Mho . was it? The name flashed across his mind, ‘ —and immediately the policeman's hand touched the man’s shoulder. “Robert Abercrombie Brown, you're wanted for issuing valueless cheques j at Palmerston North !” 11, was no use protesting. Robert Abercrombie had been missing for 1 some time, and here, at (lie comil ry s ' back door, a constable new to the | district had the number of his mess. , The train for lieefton was just starling. so the two men went in together, ■ and no one but they themselves knew ’ with what object. Robert Abcrcronibie Brown was brought back to Greymouih yesterday , and after a little interview with Air. i W. Aleldrum. S.M., his case was ad- ; jonrned to the Alagistrate's Court, ’■ Wellington, where he will answer a ' - hargo of issuing valueless cheques at ■i Imorston North. On the station this morning, two < well-dressed men stood on the plat I f rm of a first-class carriage. One was Constable Joseph AVilson and the other was Bobert Abercrombie Brown belli bound for Wellington. < i
