A fire at midnight, in the buildings on sections , leased by the Railway Department, Station Street, gutted Hannah’s billiard saloon, Kummer's (seedsman) shop and the “Hawkes Bay Herald” agency office. Adjoining premises on either side, occupied by Kessell (boot shop) and Charles (fruiterer) were slightly damaged. The destroyed buildings were the property of W. P- Fitzgerald. The origin of the lire is unknown. TILE WORKS BURNT. TAUMARUNUI, March 15. At five o’clock this morning, fire broke out in Winstone’s roof and tile works. The drying sheds and the stnicture work round eight kilns were destroyed, and the main buildings reduced to ashes. The fire had a strong hold when the alarm was given, but the brigade succeded in saving the engine sheds and valuable machinery, including a new hundi’ed horsepower boiler. Twenty thousand tiles were destroyed. Winstone’s premises were burnt to the ground in October, 1919. The damage is estimated at £5OOO above the insurances.
