(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 12. The eight Alaurice Terrace houses destroyed by fire were all substantial two-storey residences, of a superior type. The two in McKenzie Terrace were modern commodious homes, lhey are a total loss, for nothing is left of the houses burnt out but the solitary high chimney slacks standing like the columns of a ruined temple. The damage is estimated at between £25,000 and £35,000. The loss to insurance companies is put down at about £20,000. Following are the details, as far as can be ascertained, of the owners and occupiers of the houses destroyed; — On Maurice Terrace : No. 25 Mrs. B; Berry, owner and occupier, with her daughter and live girl students, as boarders. No. 23, J. L. Morrison, owner. The occupier was absent at the time, there being two occupants. No. 21, J. Harle, owner and occupier, with Mrs. Harle and two children, also two lady visitors from New Plymouth. No. 19.—E. Sime, owner and occupier, with his family. No. 17. —Mrs. Barker, whose son, N. A. J. Barker, was the occupier of the top floor, while Mr. and Mrs. Percy South were ikeupiers on the bottom floor. No. 15. —Mrs. J. Rains, owner and occupier. No. 13, Mr. Charles Bush, owner and occupier. ■Io. 11, Mr. J. Mathers. The houses burnt on McKenzie Terraco -were : — No. 9, Public Trustee, in the estate of the late Mrs. A. D. AVelch ; occupied by Mr. Frank AV. Bell, with his family. No. 7.—Mrs. M. lAlcGavin, owner and occupier. No. 5, Captain Smith. This was damaged by scorching; and excess’ve heat. The other adjoining houses were more or less scorched. The insurances are as yet incomplete, but the following amounts have been ascertained : Mrs. B. L. Berry, house £l5OO in the Standard Office ; furniture £390 in the Atlas. J. L. Morrison, house £ISOJ and furniture £BOO, both in the South British Office. C. Bush, house £9GO in the Sun Office. P. A. South, furniture £2OO in the United Office. The Welsh estate, house £6OO in the Commercial Union. Mrs. Barker, furniture, etc., £425 in the Sun Office. J. Mathers, furniture £3OO in the Sun Office. Mrs. McGavin, furniture £575 in the State Fire Office; house £5OO in the Standard Office. James Smith, 5 McKenzie Terrace, furniture £lOO in the State Fire Office.
