PAHOA. HOAD RACE. The interest being taken in ih local revival of sports generally wa again evident on .'Saturday after noon ,when tally two hundred specta tors witnessed the first road race o the season. The course was from th, Suburban Hotel to Paroa and back approximately ten miles. The weathei was line during the race, and fTn showers that fell in the morning iin proved the condition of the rout which was in fairly good order. Twelve riders nominated, but Messrs J. Curnow 30 secs., AV Crook 30, AV. A. Burleigh 70, an I (!. Per kins 70, were scratched, leaving eight competitors. ’lhese were: D. Wright scr., C. Coxall 5 secs., J. Goodall 40, AV. Lanini 40, C. Williams 50, T. McKay 60, A. W. Kitchingham CO, and C. Lamont 70. Mr. G. E. Perkins acted as starter and judge, and Air. Con. Hall was timekeeper. Air. Perkins pointed out that no outside pacing would be allowed, but competitors could pace each other if they wished. The limit man got away about seven minutes past three o’clock, the rest of the riders going off at their allotted times without mishap. The scratch man, AVright, had caught, and passed the. others when Paroa was reached. The order of turning was Wright, Kitchingham, McKay, and Goodall, these four being well bunched, with the rest strung out. In the run homo AVright proved too good, and won easily from Goodall, with AlcKay close up third. AVilliams was the only other man to finish near Iho leaders. The actual riding limes were: AVright 27 min. 40 secs., Goodall 28 min. 22 secs., AlcKav 28 min. 48 secs.. AVilliams 28 mm. 10 secs. Wright annexed the fastest time. The prizes were as follow :—-Ist, £2 and pair of tyres valued at £2 2s (donated, by Mr. W. Gamble); 2ml, £1 10s;' 3rd 15/-: fastest lime, pair tvres (donated by AV. B. Clarkson ami Co., AVellington). As this was the first road race held and the riders’ capabilities were, practically unknown, the handicappers had to -work in the dark. ’The next race should be more interesting. On Saturday’s riding AVright could have given away minutes instead of seconds, and won. He had the r<u.u in hand from the word “go.” The- next of the series of road races is being eagerly awaited, and a pair of tyres has already been promised as a trophy by Mr. 11.I 1 . C. AVade. The event will take place on March 25 over the same distance. Now that the ice has been broken, so to speak, many young riders in the town and district will probably come forward and show what they can do. The Greymouth Athletic Club is deserving of every support for its efforts to revive all classes of sport in tiro district. Present indications point to an early return of pre-war enthusiasm. SIX DAYS’ RACE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEAV YORK, Al arch 12. Alfred Grenada and Reggie McNamara, comprising an AustralianAmerican team, won one of the greatest six day bicycle races in history to-night. ‘The team lapped the. field of sixteen early in the week and retained the lead.
