Our Christchurch corresponuent telegraphed to-day :-Several organisations m Christchurch have r- ceiked a communication from the Dominion sportsmen s Association, with headquarters at Wellimjton, on. the subject of a petition to Parliament asking for legislation to legalise and license bookmakers. The petition, it j s stated, is to be supported "By an extensive publicity campaign which" has been placed in the hands a large and dependable advertising agency, appeal is made for assistance against the .wowser killjoy element who are up against every traditional and personal liberty. All feel the time is opportune that everyone should combine to prevent th e sportloving people of the Dominion being dragged at the chariot wheels of a shrieking minority, whose sole object seems to be to interfere a-s .’much as possible with those pleasures of their fellow men and women with which they do'not agree.” The petition asserts that it would be much more satisfactory in the interests of public morality for the State to license bookmakers to carry on their business on racecourses only, under proper control by the New Zealand racing and trotting conferences.
