Coates of the deputation of Barrytown settlers yesterday, who placed before him the claims of their district. There was nothing in’ the nature of a- speech on any of the subjects. The leaders of the deputation 'stated their case in plain terms and settled the whole of the business in half an hour. This was much appreciated' by the Minister as the banquet had been lengthy and he was anxious to get through' to Greymouth where larger deputations awaited him. There is a certain type of union , official who appears to think that the best means of approaching a Cabinet L Minister with' complaints and requests is to do so in an aggressive, bullying manner. A bigger mistake was never macle. A man got damages at Edmonton because a dog tore the seat out of his trousers, “for no reason at all.” . It was explained that he was on } friendly terms with another dog —• , an enemy of the one that bit him. Consequently he was put down by the first dog as “another of the same sort.” A new newsprint mill at Three 1 Rivers, Quebec, w r as recently started. '! he opening of this mill j will make the capacity of the Canadian newsprint plants well over 1,000,000 tons a year. Thousands of mutton birds were observed at Ocean Beach (Southland) ’ last week. The birds had driven shoals of small fish like sardines In shore, and these were gathered by ‘ people in buckets, basins, and baskets 3 in fact, in anything that would con--3 tain them. Despite the presence of a large number of people, the birds ■ flew amongst them fearlessly, and continued to feed on their helpless [ prey. 1 To launder table linen and sum--5 mer wear a perfect colour and texture, without rubbing or affecting your hands, use “No-Rubbing” ■ Laundry Help.—Advt. f A fain collection of specimens ot > the different grasses growing on the Coast will be on exhibition at the • Westland A. and P. G. - Coates of Barrytown yesterday, refer- > ring to the position of returned soldiers on Crown lands. Fie went on to say that the Government was rea'dy ,to assist them at all times. Every man could not be a farmer, but no , section of the community did more valuable service. The last thing the country wanted was a number of disappointed settlers giving up their holdings. They should have every ■ encouragement in the way of access to markets and so on, but as far- as returned soldiers were concerned they might depend on the Government 1 helping them if they kept their i farms. The soldiers had Helped the ■ Empire and the Government would see them through. •Writing Pads.—During the winter evenings, what could you do. The good people of Barrytown were greatly amused yesterday at the efforts of the amateur horsemen from Greymouth. Two of the partv which the Minister were experiencing practically their first mount and one had the misfortune to be absent when the. saddles _ were aiven out. There were no accidents however, but the amateurs were not quite pleased with the habit some of the horses had of persisting m a trot. Ambling, slow as it was, and oven cantering were preferable to th® painful process of a trot: but a gallop usually meant that one’s foot became detached from the stirrup. One maik wondered why he could not si comfortably on the horse’s back and it was only bv dint of almost superhuman effort "that he maintained a hold of the saddle for nearly two miles. Then a settler, bursting with merriment, lowered the stirrups about nine inches. The new catalogues of Pictorial Review Patterns for February, 1922, aer on view at A. E. Kilgour’s. Of special interest to New Zealanders are the observations of BrigadierGeneral Dean, of Adelaide, who lias been on a business visit to~ England and Canada, on the possibilities of colonial produce at Home and elsewhere. Being interested in colonial produce, wheat, meat, butter _ and fruit, General Dean inquired closely into the market prospects, and conies back very hopeful. While ne was m Canada the General did not lose sight of tho business aspect of the relationship of tho' Dominion and the Commonwealth, and he is. _ certain that there are vast possibilities of trade between the two countries. In his opinion tho matter all depends on how it is opened up. Properly handled he sees no reason why it should not be a distinct srtccess. “Reciprocity within the Empire” is his slogan. Ho cannot for the life of him see why our returned soldiers, who suffered so much for tho Empire during the war, should have to compete against cheap foreign labour. So the old corn has come back.
