VICE-REGAL VISIT
_— footing the bill. “Bay up and look pleasant, is tliu fate of the Greymouth Borough Council in connection with the deficit on 1 the entertainment of the Governor--1 General (Lord Jellicoe) during his * recent visit to Greymouth. At last ' evening’s meeting of the Council the ’ Mayor (Mr. J. D. Lynch) stated that ’ the sub-committee appointed by the ’ Council met during the week and arriv--5 ed at what they considered a very fair solution of the difficulty. They then waited on the Grey County Council and asked that body to increase its contri- ; bution from £lO to £2O. The result was that the Council stood firm and refused to go beyond £lO. The actual cost of the dinner tendered to the Go-vernor-General was £55, less about : £22 from the. sale of tickets. The total cost of entertaining the GovernorGeneral was £134 odd. Apart from the dinner, the rest of the expenses comprised decorations, advertisements, printing and other expenses. The position now was that the Borough Council would have to bear the brunt of the deficit. The chairman of the Grey Harbour Board had agreed to recommend that the Board’s contribution be increased from £lO to £2O, and the Cobden Town Board also agreed to double its donation of £5. The total deficit remaining was about £7l. He supposed the incident would now have to close. They had gained some experience, however. The attitude of the Grey County Council was very disappointing. lie would know a little better next time a public celebration was arranged. In reply to Cr. W. C. S. Colclough, the Mayor stated that Mr. .1. W. Hannan, chairman of the Grey County Council, had n<yt committed his Council to anything, so the Council had not broken any promise. Cr. It. J. Williams said the Mayor’s prominent part in entertaining the Governor-General should be recognised. He moved a vote of thanks to Mr. Lynch. The motion was seconded by Cr. K. Skoglund, and carried. Cr. Colclough stated that the Mayor had handed him a very large cheque out of his own pocket to help in meeting the expense. Cr. W. 11. Parfitt, also paid a tri’Ue to the Mayor, who had spent time and money in entertaining Lord Jellicoe. The Mayor thanked the-Council for their remarks and vote. Tie had done his best. He considered it was fitting that the Governor-General should be honoured. ; Jhe following is the balance sheet in connection with the entertaining of the Governor General during his visit to Greymouth, April 4 and 5 last; -
