WAR MEMORIAL

A NEW SUGGESTION

The Greymouth School Committee at last evening's iiKeUng, Mr. VMackenzie in ue chair, uecided tnat an opui Icucr be inserted in the Press requetii-g those people wno subscribed to the fund lor the erection of a war memorial for ’no Grey district, to authorise the transfer “of ’heir subsciiptions to the School Committee, to bo used in older to complete the election of the memorial gates and fence at tne Grev District High School. . Mr. J. Tennent, in bringing forward the proposition, stated that as the district war memorial scheme seemed to have died a natural dea h, he thought it would Le a good idea if the subscriptions already "eceiyed were devoted to the school memorial, as that appeared to be the only war memorial going to be erected. Mr. R. J. Williams asked if it would be possible to have ti.e names of all the sokhers from t' e .district put on the memorial slabs if the subscriptions were handed over, and thus make the memorial one for the district as well as the school. Mr. Tennent said that if the money was forthcoming additional slabs could be erected. . . Members were of the opinion that the school memorial must be Kept separate, and Mr. Tennent then f-u o" gested that the fence be completed the full distance in front of the school, and sep irate sla s be erccte 1 at each end of <he -rounds lor the nanus of d'striM soldiers. _ It was the fremral opinion of committee members t b at there was not enough money in sight at present f'>r such a scheme . Mr. Williams was in favour ot some action being taken, as, he said, there was now a slur on the town, which possessed no war memorial. On the motion of Mr. Tennent, seconded by Mr. F. Pullen, it was decided that the open letter to subscribers be published.
