GREY ROWLING CLUB

SEASON OPENED. The Greymouth Bowling Club lost little by postponing the official opening of the season last week, as yesterday was an ideal day, beautiful weather being experienced. There was a good attendance, and the green was in good condition, but heavy. Afternoon tea dispensed by the ladies was much appreciated. In the absence of the President, Mr. D. Tennent (vice-president) declared the green open for the season. In expressing his pleasure in doing so, Mr. Tennent stated that the ceremony was taking place this year nearly a month later than last year. On behalf of the Club, he extended a hearty welcome to the ladies, and thanked them especially for the way in which they had catered to the wants of members during the past season ; also in anticipation fol’ the coming season. The Club had no intention of discharging the ladies from their duties, but were glad to re-etl-gago them on their own terms. The speaker apologised lor the absence of the Club’s president (Air. J. Steer) who was on holiday in Australia, but had cabled his wishes for the Chib’s success. The various bowling clubs on the Coast had also sent good wish-

The past year, continued Air. Tennent, had been very successful so far as the Club was concerned, and they had been able to redeem the mortgage by £lOO, leaving a debit of £300; but that could also be said to have been redeemed, by means of the free loan subscribed by members of the Club. .In the meantime, the bowlers had the satisfaction of doing something for the Club. If they did not get (heir money back —well, the sd'nie thing would apply. (Laughter.) One of their members, Air. E. J. Smith, had died during the year, and the deep sympathy of the club went out to his widow and family. Two other members, Alessrs J. Bevan and C. AV'. Cooke, had left the district and suosequently crossed the Great Divide In addition, twenty-one members had loft the district, and that had made a big gap in the membership ; therefore it behoved every member of the Club to bring along new members. The membership was now about 80, as against 105 last. year. He returned thanks to the greenkeeper (Mr. lairhall) for his good work during the year. Air. Alorey had levelled the green and Mr. Fairhall had top-dresß* cd it, with the result that; it was now in as fine a condition as any green in the Dominion.

Air. Tennent enumerated the winners of the various trophies last year, and trusted that the contests would again be keen this season. He trusted that tin' inter-club matches would continue to be played in the same good spirit that had always characterised them. The gift of a. cup by a team of visiting bowlers was as fine a thing as he hail known. The Ballinger Buckles were always the subject of healthy rivalry between' the West Coast clubs. “You know where they an' now,” said Air. Tennent, amidst laughter, “and how they got then. No doubt you will remember ‘The Day.’ ’’ As vice-president, he had the pleasure of donating a medal foi competition among the Colts. It was generally admitted that a good deal of attention should be given to new players, and ho was glad to state that Air. P Buck, one of the Club's prominent players, had undertaken to coach the new hands, for which he deserved hearty thanks. In regard to other sports, he said if. was onlv right and fitting to menlim.
