WAR MEMORIAL

We shall be pleased to receive and acknowledge any further donations. COMMITTEE MEETING. The Grey District Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Committee met yesterday; present The Mayor (Mr. J. D.‘ Lynch) Messrs Ashton, Trouland, Caigou and Colclough. Apologies were received from Messrs Gillies and Skoglund. It was resolved that an account be opened in the Post Office Savings Bank in the names of the “Grey District Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Fund.” The Mayor and Messrs Caigou and Colclough were appointed as trustees and Mr. F. H. Denton as secretary and treasurer. It was decided that the resolution carried at a public meeting regarding the erection of a cenotaph be adhered to, and that the question of a site be deferred until it is settled by a public meeting. A motion was passed : “That the public be asked to contribute one day’s pay towards the fund, or such other amounts in individual sums or allotments spread over a period. A letter was received from Mr. F. AV. Whitmore, Rotomanu, reporting that at a meetin'g held there it had been unanimously resolved to support the Greymouth proposals. It was hoped to collect a generous amount from residents. Mr. J. N. Lawson, Paroa, wrote accepting appointment as official collector and convenor for the Paroa district, also asking for official subscription lists. It was decided that lists be sent as requested. Mr. Noel Peat, Moana, also accepted appointment as collector for the .Moana district, and suggested that Mr. G. Sheldon be also appointed as joint collector. It was agreed that Mr. Sheldon be appointed to act in conjunction with Mr. Peat. Mr O. Christian, Otira, also wrote expressing his willingness to assist, and suggesting that the committee write to other Otira residents, with a view to a meeting being held there to ensure a substantial sum being raised. Accounts amounting to £4 12s were passed for payment.
