VALEDICTORY.

: MR. J. FLETCHER. A splendid tribute to the valuable work done by AH. .1. Fletcher was paid him l/y the members of the Greynwuth Bowljiig Solo Whist Club in the Pavilion last evening. Mr. J. Steer, President of the Bowling Club was voted to the chair. He said that the friends round the table "had m(?t for the purpose of saying “Au Revoir” and making a small presentation in recognition of the many kindnesses received from Mr. Fletcher, who was always willing to assist bowlers in every possible way. It was a rule that members going away from the Bowling Club should not receive a presentation. Had it not been for this, the room would have lieen taxed to do honour to their guest, personally he would feel Mr. Fletcher's removal. He (the speaker) ‘had met him in different walks of life and Mr. Fletcher had endeared himself to all. He had saved the Bowling Club many pounds in the work that had beeri-done by him, and only recently he had assisted in levelling the green. His “laugh” on the’ green was a treat to hear, and if one felt “down in the dumps” one had only to meet Air Fletcher, and he would make you smile and your thoughts wander away in other directions. All hoped that Mr, Mrs and Miss Fletcher would enjoy good health and happiness. On behalf of the Solo Club, Mr. Steer handed to the guest a silver flaskx suitably inscribed. . Messrs W. Cochrane, J. Chalk, J. C. Gittos, F. H. Kilgour AA Scott, F. Baldwin, H. Doogan, ’ • ,b Christie, G. Blackwood, J. I. AA hie, and D. McKay endorsed the chanman's remarks and good wishes The chairman apologised for the absence of Messrs T. Jones, T. Popliss, J. Hannan, and R. Johnston, the la - ter being confined to his bed with a severe cold. Mr. J. Fletcher, on rising was greeted with applause. He said that he felt distinctly nervous after all the <rood things that had been said about uim as he knew that their sentiments had come from their hearts. He had , spent nine years of his life in Greymouth and in leaving them he would miss more than words could speak, especially the Bowling Club and his associates. Whatever office he had taken he had always endeavoured to do his best and he felt sure that he would never meet the good fellowship that he was leaving behind him. Ho was proud to think that the deben- * tures to release the club of its present liability had been taken up so readily by the members. He would in no small measure miss his evenings. a solo whist. He hoped the members would stick together and spend their evenings with pleasure to themselves and all concerned. He thanked them from the- bottom of his heart for their kindly reference to Mrs and Miss Fletcher (applause). The singing for “They are jollj ' fellows” brought a pleasant halt neur to a termination. The rest of the evening was spent m cards, being thoroughly ' enjoyed by all who took part. ... WHEN STOMACH CRIES OC f i IN PAIN.
