Miss Rosemary Rees arrived at Greymoutli to-day. Mr. Cooper, of Denniston has been appointed conductor of the Westport Garrison Band. ' The report of the illness of the Rev. Howard Elliott is officially contradicted. Mr. Elliott is at present in Napier where he attended at the P.P.A. office. He shortly intends visiting Australia. Sir Janies Rodd, late Ambassador at Rome, will be the British delegate to the meeting of the League of Nations Assembly. The appointments of Lieut.-Colonel H. H. Allison to command the Bth (Nelson) Mounted Rifles, ami Lieut.Colonel C. P. Bruerton to command 2nd Battalion Canterbury Regiment, are gazetted. Constable T. Shannon, formerly of Greymouth and now stationed at Shannon, left by the Otira express this morning, after spending a month’s holiday in Greymouth. Owing to the indisposition of Mrs. Parr, the Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education and Public Health, has notified Mr. Seddon, M.P., that the dates for the projected trip to the West Coast cannot be fixed at present. • A Brisbane cablegram received today stated that the Mayor of Brisbane presided at a public meeting which decided to erect a national memorial of the. late Mr. T. J. Ryan’s services to Queensland. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. D. Lynch) will officially open the Gard.n Fete which is to be held at Mis. Hannan’s commodious grounds, Alexander Street, on next Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Miss Al’Gill (To Arolia) is paying a. visit to friends on the West Coast, and is the guest of the Misses Deere, Herbert Street. Miss M’Gill is a daughter of the late Mr. M’Gill, for many years a resident of Totara Flat.

The death occurred at Nelson last week of Mr. E. Hewlett, formerly a driver of Messrs Newman Bros.’ cars. Since leaving the West Coast, Mr. Hewlett worked up a good business in Nelson and had been to America and the Old Country.

Another old identity of the Coast passed away at the Old People s Home on Friday morning, in the person of Mr. Laurence Dunn. Deceased who was a gold miner, resided for many years at Cape Terrace and was generally respected for his many good qualities.

Mr. George de Lani Carter, representing Beaumont Smith Productions, who has boon visiting the West Coast in connection with the screening c the picture, “The Betrayer,” loft by this morning’s express en route to Invercargill.

The victim of the Mangahao gelignite explosion which occurred last week, Mr. Murdock, was 34 years oi age. was born at Kumara, Westiam, and left for the front with the Ninth Reinforcements. He was a member o the Tunnelling Corps, and with that body saw sereice until the signing of the armistice. He was i battle of Messines, but was not sent home. On returning from the front he resided with his mother in ° c ville for some time, and a few we ■ks prior to last Christmas took up work at Mangahao. "Mr. Lynch, who was also injured in the same explosion served with the late Mr. Murdoch throughout the war. Mr Murdoch was one of four , brothers who saw service during the war x and was well known on the West Coast. He was married to Miss K. Persson, of Palmerston North, just six weeks prior to in» death.
