•Inspector Mathieson returned from Westport last evening. Superintendent Dwyer, who has been in charge of the CanterburyPolice District for the past eight years retires to-morrow on superannuation. His position will be filled by Inspector Denary.—Press Association. Mrs. A. Skilton, a resident of 55 years in New Zealand, 35 of which were spent in Westport, died on Monday at the age of 88 years. Deceased is survived by two sons, Messrs A. and W. Skilton. , Miss M. Jellicoe, aged 90, has died at Southampton. She was an aunt of Lord Jellicoe. Miss •Catherine Jellicoe, her sister, will celebrate her hundredth birthday in September.— Press Association. —. j The death took place in the Westport Old People’s Home on Monday, of William Frederick Maiben (better known as Robinson), an old mining prospector, aged 82 years. Deceased was a native of Valparaiso. He resided for a considerable time in New Zealand, at Waimangarba, spent some years in South Africa and returned to New Zealand twelve years ago. He was' a skilful musician and in his younger days a noted athlete. The death occurred in Wellington last week of Mr. William Bryant, oi Manakau, and late of Ohariu. The late Mr. Bryant was one of the bestknown farmers on the West Coast of the North Island, and as stock agent for Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., he was brought into contact with people of all classes of the community. For several years ho was a counof the Horowhenua County Council. Mr. E- L. Kehoe, who for the past eight and a-half years hasbeen manager and instructor at Rossbotham’s Commercial College, was presented by the staff and pupils with a solid silver cigarette case and a handsome travelling rug as tokens of their esteem. Miss A. Rutherford made the presentations. Miss McPherson and Miss Rice, members of the staff, expressed regret that the College was losing such a capable and painstaking instructor, but congratulated him on his promotion. Mr. Kehoe has been appointed supervisor of the Greymouth Technical School and takes up his new duties on Friday next.
