HOKITIKA GATHERING. New Year’s Day was beautifully fine, and gladdened the hearts of a’ Scotsmen, and as a natual sequence the sports held in Cass Square were well atended, and a big success. About £35 was taken at the gates. This, however, did not truly represent the attendance, for many came on to the grounds after the gates were abandoned by the keepers. The I’ipe Band, under Pipemaster D. Cullen, ol Kokatahi, paraded the town and rendered some selecr tions on the grounds. The various comP petitions and sporting events were got oil' well to time and were interesting. The . step-dancing was of a high order. The picturesque Highland dress was much in [ evidence. The items were exceptionally good and encores were the order of the evening. It is not my intention to attempt criticism or individualise, but merely to repeat that the programme was very good and of splendid variety. A word of praise is due to Mr Alan Wogan, the secretary, who, although most unostentatious, had everything arranged thoroughly for the whole day, and Chief Davidson gave his sunny welcome to one and a . At the concert he thanked all who had assisted during the day and tnen thanked and wished everybody a Happy and Prosperous New Year. My remarks would not be complete without reference to the big improvement made by the Pipe Band under tilt able tuition of Mr D. Cullen. On New Year’s Eve this band enlivened the town with selections at various points. The Judges in the piping and dancing events were Messrs J. J. Allan, of Dunsandel, and A. W. MacGillivray, of Christ church, who gave general satisfaction and expressed pleasure at the high standard of dancing. With Saturday’s wins, Miss MelbaGibbons has to her credit 35 firsts and six seconds. She is eleven years of age.
