TENNIS

COMBINED DOUBLES HANDICAP. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The bad weather conditions which have prevailed since the opening of the tennis season in Grey mouth this year have militated against constant practice on the local courts, so that it is small wonder that the beautiful tennis conditions prevailing on Saturday drew such a large attendahee of players to the Greymoutii Tennis Club’s courts. The prospects for a most successful sedson in Greymoutii are very bright; keenness is in 'the atmosphere; the West Coast championships (to be played in Greymoutii) are ahead, and it will occasion no surprise if the 1920-21 season should prove one of the best in the annals of the club. Saturday’s Combined Doubles Handicap was the opening competition game of this season, and from both the players’ and the spectators’ point of view it was entirely successful. The majority of tne games were keenly couLsten, auu despite tlie lact tnat Uie handicappers haa nor much to work on in the way of judging the form so early in the season, runaway victories were the exception. Tile fol.ovvuig were the results; FIRST ROUND. (Game, 40 Points.) Pratt add Mrs Lawn (scr.), a bye. A bantu and Miss D. \\ickcs (±0) beat ■ Peters and Mrs Baldwin (scr.) 4d—36. F. Laurenson and Miss Bath beat Allison and Miss V. Wickes, 44 —42.

FINAL. Kitchingham and Miss N. Tennent beat Eauienson and Miss Bath, 40—30. As might have been expected, the play was marked by unevenness, some of the pairs playing most consistently throughout, while others collapsed. Generally speaking, the play was interesting, the best game of the day being the semi-final between Allison and Miss V. Wickes and Laurenson and Miss Bath, when 86 points (44 —42) had to be notched before the latter pair won out. Miss Bath played particularly well during the afternoon until the final, when her previous efforts told and she perceptibly tired. The winning nnir. Khe inn r/ham and Miss N. Tennent,

I f o played consistently well throughout, and thoroughly deserved their win. Dainty refreshments were handed‘round by the ladies, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Players are eagerly looking forward to the inter-club match with the Hokitika Club on Saturday, December 4th, when teams of six ladies and six re Women from each club will meet on the local courts.
