LIABILITY TO TUBERCULOSIS
The "Public Health Journal" deals with the important subject of the health of the immigrants from India who are arriving ■in this country in considerable numbers. "It has been reported to the Department," says "cue ofncial publication, "that many Hindu immigrants report shortly after admission to New Zealand for treatmenc for tuberculosis, ond some pressure is being brought to bear upon the Department with a view to endeavouring to some extent to prohibit the landing of these immigrants. The Department, however, is only concerned with the health of a person arriving in New Zealand is such that will not place him within the scope of the Immigration Restriction Act, and it is actuated by no other policy than this in any of its actions. The Port Health Officers are insti ucted to examine stringently every Hindu immigrant landing in the Dominion, and to report to the Customs Department any such person whose physical condition leads him __ to believe he is infirm and in the New Zealand climate may become a charge in the public or any charitable instituticn. We know that Hindus come from a hot climate, and are naturally net so immune to the rigours of our temperate climate, and we have evidence already that such persons do bocome a charge."
