SUGAR DISPUTE UNSETTLED. AUCKLAND, August 27. —The Chelsea sugar factory was ready for a resumption of refining operations to-day but the men declined to return to work.

WESTPORT SCHOOL OF MINES. WESTPORT, August 27.—Out of seven applicants, Mr. J. F. McPadden Director to the Reeftou School of Mines, was this evening appointed Director of the- Westport School of Mines.

TRAMWAY UNION CHARGED. “ AUCKLAND, This day.—The Crown Solicitor has' instituted • proceedings against the Tramway Union in connection with the tramway strike which arose- out of the jockeys’ dispute. The hearing has been fixed for September 22nd. A STABBING AFFRAY. WELLINGTON, This Day.—A message loceived by the police from Martinborough states that during a quarrel between two men, David Carlston stepped in to stop them, and was stabbed between the ribs. Cft’lston was removed to the hospital in a serious condition. His alleged assailant was arrested.

COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. DUNEDIN, August 27.—At the Police Court to-day Matthew Bradley, City Councillor, aged 62 years, was charged with carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16 years. Chief Deteefcive Bishop, who prosecuted, suggested that the Court, which was crowded, should be cleared, as the details of the case were pretty bad.’ Magistrate Bartholomew then ordered the" Court to be cleared and forbade the publication of any details of the evidence. The accused, who reserved liis defence, was committed for trial, bail being allowed.

PRIVILEGE RAILWAY TICKETS. WELLINGTON, August 27.—1 tis understood that fur various reasons a considerable number of returned soldiers have not yet made use of the orders for privilege railway tickets enabling them to travel free for 28 days over the railways of the Dominion. It has been decided that all orders must be exchanged for railway tickets not later than November 2nd next. In effect this means that no privilege railway ticket issued to a siiuier will be available after November 30th, when the 28 days will expire. Owing to very heavy demands that will be made upon the time of the railway stafis in all parts of the Dominion from November onwards, soldiers entitled to claim the privilege tickets are requested to make application for them as early as possible.
