INGLESIDE

GREY CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Last evening the fourweokly Ingleside of the above Society took place, and the gathering was one of the finest yet held by the society. Close on two hundred members and visitors attended, and a party from Hokitika including Chief Davidson, Miss Perry, Miss Davidson, and Mr. Boyd, paid a visit on behalf of the Hokitika Caledonian Society. The brightness of the gathering was added to by the appearance of a goodly number in the national garb of Scotland. The hall was beautifully decorated, and a line programme of ,j musical and dancing items was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Miss Perry sung “Bonnie Mary of Argyle,” and her line clear, strong voice fairly captivated her hearers, who demanded a repetition. Later on she sang “If I Might Come to Yon,” and again she delighted everyone. Mr, McMurran sang “The Star of Robbie Burns,” and “The Braes of Ballochmyle” in good style, and Mr. J. Fraser pleased everyone with “The Laird o’Cockpen,” and “The Hundred Pipers.” Mr. Douglas sang “The Mountain I.over.” and Miss Drake “Flora Macdonald’s Lament” two very beautiful songs which were both sung with good feeling. Mr. Boyd of Hokitika sang “Mary.” During the evening (he Chief, Mr. P. Mackenzie, took the opportunity of extending a welcome to Chief Davidson and the, Hokitika - visitors. Ho also mentioned that the next Ingleside would be under the management of the young ladies of the society, to see whether they could outdo the enjoyable evening given by the bachelors. Miss O’Brien, being a member of the Ladies Committee, would act as convenor. The Chief also mentioned that it had been decided by the Committee to accede to the request to give another concert in Reefton in when a piping competition for a live'guinea trophy, presented bv Dr. Scott would be arranged if possible. At Hallowe’en the last evening in October, a children’s Ingleside would be arranged, and competitions lor Scotch songs and recitations would be held. Good prizes presented b} r various members would lie given if sufficient entries were received. Chief Davidson .in his reply, said he was proud to be at such a large gathering of people of Scotch descent which was a proof that they were loyal to the land of their Jsrrtli, or that of their parents and also to their King and Country. The Hokitika Society was not so strong numerically, hut they made plenty of noise, as they had a good pipe band, and he thought it probable that they would provide most of the competitors for Dr. Scott’s trophy. He invited the members to visit, the Hokitika Society, when they would receive a hearty welcome. He wished the Grey Society a continuation of their great success. Mr. Boyd and his pupils again gave some very fine exhibitions of Highland dancing—the Highland Keel, Reel of Tnllock, and scan Triubhais, Piper IT. Davidson supplying trie music. The Chief mentioned that Mr. Boyd was not likely to remain much longer on the Coast, and advised his pupils to absorb- all the instruction they could in the meantime.
