Earl has been appointed Assistant-Dredgernaster by the Westport Harbour Board, and will take up his duties on September Ist. The friends of Mrs. Chapman,, a former resident of Reefton and Murchison will regret to learn that she is at present seriously ill at the Grey River Hospital. The promotion of Mr. W. 11. Warburton from diamond driller to drill superintendent at Rur.anga, has been gazetted. Mr. Mamott K. B. Sheard has been appointed by the Registrar-General as registrar of births and deaths only, at Runanga. Mr. W. A. Parkinson, senior, proprietor of the "Hawe.ra Star" has died in London alter an operation, — Press Association message. Advice was received to-day that Mr. H. P. Doogan, who successfully underwent an operation at the Lewisham private hospital yesterday, is progressing favourably. Mrs. Morton, of Wellington, who has been paying a brief visit'to her daughter, Mrs. R. Kitching. Greymouth, left by the Otira express today, en route to Sydney. Mr. Neil Petei'sen, of Lamplbugh, the oldest resident of Stafford, died yesterday at the Westland Hospital. He was a Swede by birth, and had attained the age of 85 years.

As a mark of their esteem, and a tribute to his lengthy and splendid service with the military authorities, the oTicer commanding the 13th (West Coast) Regiment and his colleagues have invited Captain Colclough to be their guest at a dinner to be given in his honour at the Empire Hotel this evening. An extensive toast list has been prepared.
