A report has been prepared on public accounts, containing glaring exam pies of prodigious waste. It gives instances in connection with the erection of hutments which were on the verge of being scandalous. Much money was spent in Ministry information without any attempt at securing the Treasury approval. The Commissioners found there was much unnecessary loss through remiss administration For instance £700,000 was advanced to the Y.M.C.A. of which £IOO,OOO was repaid. ‘lt was eventually decided that it should be Treated as a War Office grant. In respect to such services as education, food and production the Department made a loss of £4,000,000 on various schemes which were over optimistically undertaken.
