CANTERBURY PROGRESS LEAGUE

A deputation from the Westland branch of this League waited upon the Borough Council last night for assistance. The deputation consisted of Messrs It. Wild (Chairman,: J. W. Jeffries (vice chairman), and A. G. Pilkington (secretary). Mr. Wild briefly Preferred to the League and its objects and stated that a delegation of from 10 to 14'-,of the Canterbury members, representing, various local bodies would be making a visit to Westland next-week, and although they were paying their way. it was necessary to sliow them around. As they were not going to revert to the old coaching days, cars were• required and the programme mapped out would cost close on £IOO. It was desirous that the visitors should see the potentialities of Westland and know its needs, and they came to the Council asking for. financial assistance in the matter. Messrs Jeffries and Pilkington supported Mr. Wild and emphasised the fact! that Holdtika would benefit considerably by the work of the League. To some degree the time was inopportune to incur such great expense, but they felt sure the visit of the delegates would; lead to assisting the progress of the Province.

The Mayor thanked the-deputation for attending, and the deputation having thanked "the Mayor and Councillors then withdrew. Later when the matter was being discussed by the Council, Cr. Blank said it was hardly far to expect the .taxpayers of Hokitika to pay for what apparently is a pleasure jaunt. He who howls the loudest gets the most.
