COAL SHORTAGE.
VICTORIA FACING TROUBLE MELBOURNE, August 8. The coal position is regarded as graver than at any period since 1014. Household supplies are unobtainable, and the quantity coining from New South Wales is far below what is required to keep the essential industries going at full power. Unless there is a marked improvement during the next few weeks, many factories will be compelled to close. It is anticipated that the authorities will take action, -giving precedence to coastal vessels now delayed at Newcastle, on account of the preference shown to consignments for abroad.
