DEATH SENTENCE

RONGAHERE MURDER CASE

DUNEDIN, August 6. In the Supreme Court to-day the charge against John Sharp, a farmer, aaed seventy-two, of the murder of his little daughter, aged seven by beating her on the head with a stick at Rongahere on 15th May, occupied most of the day. The jury was absent about five hours before it returned with a verdict of guilty, witn a strong recommendation to mercy. Mr. Justice Situ, in pronouncing the death sentence, said the jury had arrived at the only decision it could. The recommendation to mercy would be 'forwarded to the Executive.
