1 BOARD MEETING. ROUTINE MATTERS.' A meteing of the Greymoutli Harbour Board was held last evening, when there were present Messrs J. Steer (chairman), W. Leitch, D. Tennent, J. McLean, G. E. Perkins, J. Ryali, and W. L ring. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Secretary to the Treasury, stating that q Bill in reference to the Board’s affairs would not be ready by the 10th inst.— Received. From the General Manager of Railways stating that matter in connection with wharf lighting is being expedited, but would not be ready by the 10th inst.—Received.

From the engineer of the Lyttelton Harbour Board in reference to acetone welding, stating that if carried out by skilful operations if is quite effective. —Received. It was explained that the letter had been forwarded to tbe Inspector of Machinery. From the Director of sailing ship Wanganui, complaining of delay in towing vessel into port on last visit.—Received. From the Midland Sawmilling Co., copy of letter similar to the foregoing.—Already replied to and position explained. From Guinness and Kitchingham, fory/arding agreement of Board and Mr J. D. Lynch covering hire of diamond drill.—Ordered to be signed and sealed. From same and from Mining Registrar forwarding on behalf of tbe Dobson Coal Company copy of application for lease over 988 acres of Board’s Reserve at Dobson.—Held over till special meeting. From same suggesting that in future leases new clauses should be inserted as follows:—(It That the lessee should be liable for rates on surface rights only and that the holders of mineral rights should pav rates in respect of such rights. Under the present leases + ho holder of the surface lease is B'oble for all rates. (2) That the right of ingress, egress and regress should be reserved for all persons lawfully engaged in workin tbe minerals, etc. —lt was resolved that tbe Secretary should interview tbe Board’s, solicitor to draw up tbe suggested clauses.

From Hahn Bros., asking permission to slack timber between the Coal Crek Road and Board’s ■ hlinq- on ilie eastern side of Cobden Bridge.—Referred to the Engineer to report. From Guinness and Kitching‘mm, to -warding lease - from ‘r ord to Mrs Margaret Scott of Bet 1. section 1 . Hlaketown, for sealing.—Agreed to. From same, memorandum of mortgage, Nelson to Baxter, for consent.—Agreed to. From tlie Wanganui Harbour Board asking if the Board has a dredge for hire.—Referred to the Secretary and Harbourmaster for enquiry. From Cory-Wright and Salmon inquiring if the Board has a shunting locomotive for sale.— Received. From Baxter Bros, asking if the Board is prepared to sell the locomotive Cobden, and at what price. —lt was decided to offer the locomotive for 41750. From P. Stephenson applying for annual leave.—Granted. From the Hobson Coal Co., application for lease of sections for machinery and mine plant.—Referred to special meeting. Tenders for section 7, St Hilda. -Mrs Trahey’s tender was the highest and was accepted. Captain Cox, harbourmaster, reported that the shaping returns for July were as follows : —lnward 40 steamers (19,445 tons) and 2 sailers (899 tons); total, 42 vessels (20,644 tons). Outward: 41 steamers (21,294 tons) and 2 sailers (382 tons); total vessels 43 (21,676 tons).

For the month of July the depths at high water on the Grey har and in the river were as follow:—July 2 (springs), bar 24ft din; river 23ft 3in; July IT, 25ft llin and 24ft llin ; July 9 (neaps) bar 24ft 9in, river 23ft 9in; July 24th, 21ft Tin and 22ft Tin. Mean average for month : Bar 23ft lOin, river 23ft 4in. Rain fell on 14 days during July, the amount recorded being T. 23 inches,
