SLEEPING SICKNESS
FRENCH SCIENTIST’S CLAIM. According to a message from the 'Sun and New York Herald s’ Paris correspondent (despatched April 3rd), Arnold Net ter, an eminent drench scientist, has presented before the French Academy of Medicine an illuminative diagnosis of the disease known as “sleeping sickness,” cr encephulite- lethargigee, as well as a remarkable method for the cure of it. He recalled that out of 1,500 cases in Paris and 10;000 in the whole of France more than 33 l-3rd per rent, had died. He characterised Die disease as the most serious menace the medical world knew, and declared that it should be combated energetically. After reviewing various methods of injections and infusions for cases which were not serious, M. Netter made public a method of treatment which he said would cure advanced and dangerous eases. This method is as startling as it is heroic. He said that by means of terebsnthine injections the patient develops artifically an “abscess of fixation,” or, in other words, an abscess would result from the suppuration of all the pathological elements in the patient’s body. M. Netter said that he had observed 72 oases of the disease, and out of 25 of tlm-n treated bv the rid method Ift died, while out of 27 cases treated bv the r'-w inTbod 19 have developed abscesses. which w»ve removed. The only ones who died, he said, were those where the treatment was started too Into. M. Netter recalled that Hippocrates centuries vn showed the relation existing between lethargy and an abscess.
