HOKITIKA NOTES.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE,
(Own Correspondent.)
The monthly meeting of tne Scnool (Committee took place last evening. Pro sent: Messrs ‘W. A. Shannon (Chair), F. W. Teddersen A. C. Purchas, ,\V. E. Richards, S. J.. Preston. An apology for absence was received from Mr. A. Aitken. CORRESPONDENCE. From the South Spit school teacher reporting several children were absent from colds and state of school grounds, and mentioning requirements, \,z. shelter sheds and asphalting path round the school. tl was resolved to send a barrel of tar to the school and that labour be obtained for tarring the asphalt. It was also resolved to write to the Board respecting goise on the boundary fence. From a parent complaining that a child of his had been put backto a lower standard. The Rector's note on the matter was also read and it was resolved to receive the letter and uphold the teacher, who is the best judge in the matter. From Canterbury Board re removal of Dill man's School for addition to Hokitika. —Received. *A considerable amount of correspondence was received respecting the establishment of a boys’ hostel at Hokitika. Moved by Mr. Purchas, seconded by Mr. Preston, that Mr. Bruce when in Wellington, interview the Minister respecting the establishment of a hostel at Hokitika. Re holidays. As the term holidays were now due it was resolved that the school be closed till August 23rd, in lieu of holidays later on. RECREATION GROUND. It was resolved on the motion of Mr. Preston seconded by Mr. Teddersen that the Borough Council be approach ed with the request that the other natl of Cass Square be prepared for spoits, so that the school boys who are at present excluded owing to lack of space; may play football, cricket, etc. Messrs Purchas and Richards were appointed visitors for the ensuing mon th. The usual accounts were passed for payment and the meeting closed. AN OMISSION. I regret_having omitted the name of Miss Charlotte Morris from the list of pupils of Miss Learmont, at Kan ieri. Miss Morris's work was excellent indeed, and included the studv of roses, mentioned in my notes. I might also mention that this pupils has been commissioned to paint two similar pic tures for admirers who have seen her work.
