SUGAR SHORTAGE

FACTORY CLOSES DOWN. Apparently sugar, though in short supply, is not so scarce in Wellington as in southern centres. Owing to the shortage of sugar, Hinton and Co., Dunedin, dispensed with twenty hands a week aero, and a week later it was found necessary to dismiss twenty more. The present intention is to close the factory for a fortnight in the hope of supplies then being forthcoming. Referring to the above, the Dunedin "Star" says : "The grocers' sugar bins are now emptv. and no more will be procurable till the Navua discharges her cargo at Dunedin on Thursday. Housekeepers will have to conserve their present supplies till then."
