DEPLORABLE
LAND SPECULATION. The Auckland "Herald," usually a strong supporter of the Reform part}' and its measures, says: "It is deplor-
able to find the Government devoting ' 7.F00.000 to the settlement of soldiers on lines that are economically unsound. The prospect of an indefinite extension of the ill-considered policy of purchas ing private, land at inflated prices will excite general apprehension. It promises a new orgy of speculation and of fict'tious values, which will weigh heavily on the soldier settlers and post pone indefinitely land settlement on a sound basis."
