THE PAEROA
A TOTAL. WRECK. VESSEL BREAKING TIP. SOUTH WESTLAND TRADE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Paeroa, ashore at Hokitika, has become a total -wreck, and is now breaking up. Her timber cargo is being slowly discharged, and all her deck fittings, boats, etc., have been removed. The vessel is lying on a very steep beach, and receives the full force of the seas. There is deep water at the stern. A large number of spectators viewed the wreck on Sunday and yesterday. The remains were to be sold by auction to-day. Hokitika seems to have very bad luck in regard io its shipping', nearly all the local traders having been lost. The Waipara was wrecked at Okarito. the Jane Douglas sank in the French Pass, the Jane was lost at Okuru, the Defender was destroyed by fire at Wellington, and the Ivalraki, also n'visitor to the southern port, was lost off Grevmoutb.
Endeavours are being' made to obtain the services of the steamer Nile, of Westport, to take nn the Escrows running* in the South Westland trade.
