POLITICAL NOTES

:,;:;•■> Tories OMHE DAY. . ... - DAY BY DAY. •/; [Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, .This Day. Parliament has worked snort hours, but finds no difficulty in disposing of a few comparatively unimportant Government measures which have been introduced. The Order Paper is remarkably bare, though Ministerial assurances have steadily indicated that plenty of work will be forthcoming shortly. The Municipal Corporations Act has been referred to a Special Committee which meets on Wednesday, when it is understood that something' like a hundred amendments will be submitted by the Minister in charge. The Budget is definitely promised for Tuesday (to-morrow). This will doubtless loosen the Ministerial hold on the Government policy secrets, and will be followed by Bills, indicating the real programme of the session. The debate on the Samoan labour policy is anticipated this week. ANTI-GAMBLING BILL. WELLINGTON, July 22. Lobby talk to-day naturally turned to last night's committee divisions on the Gaming Act Amnedment Bill, and especially to the attempt to< abolish the totalisator altogether. It is stated that at least two of the Canterbury Labour members who supported Mr L. M. Isitt's amendment took that course as a protest against the treatment of the jockeys in the recent dismite, so that the number actually opposed to the totalisator is therefore reduced to four.
